Haruki Murakami - Kafka on the Shore

Kafka On The Shore by Japanse author Haruki Murakami is about the lives of the Kafka Tamura and Satoru Nakata. Though their lives are completely different and their journeys in this book start far apart, eventually theirpaths cross towards the end of the book. Until then, you will be captured by the magical world and odd creatures Murakami has created.

Kafka on the Shore

The odd chapters tell the story of 15-year old runaway Kafka Tamura. The even chapters tell the (hi)story of Satoru Nakata, who has been able to talk to cats since a mysterious event happened to him and his class in World War II. Though Nakata’s history is first told through eye witness accounts, Murakami later introduces him to us in his adult life.

Kafka on the Shore has a touch of magial realism, especially when it comes to Nakata’s strange UFO-like experience and the talking cats. One of the many things that makes this book interesting are the cunning riddles and mysteries hidden in the book. It’s not until you’ve read the book at least twice you start to discover some of these mysteries. However, reading the book only once doesn’t make it less interesting. To a first-time reader the book will probably be just a story. To those who read it a couple of times, the book becomes an inventive story filled with puzzles hidden beneath the surface of the words.
